Sam was born in Malaysia but left the country when he was five. He started his professional career with Charlton Athletic in July 2014.
Sam was highly thought of at Charlton and his playing style was compared to Michael Carrick by people at the club.
However, since joining Shamrock Rovers in 2017 the majority of his 16 appearances to date have been in the centre-back position rather than midfield. Sam bravely battled cancer two years ago before getting the all-clear to return to football.
