Shamrock Rovers 7-0 Sligo Rovers

Scorers: Noonan (2). Clarke (2), Banya Armstrong, Gallagher.

Shamrock Rovers continued their winning start in the FAI SSE Airtricity Under 15 League this afternoon when they beat Sligo Rovers by 7-0.

Sligo had a very young team and despite the final score had plenty of promising young stars in their side. The Hoops play an attacking brand of football and their use of the ball throughout was a joy to watch.

The first goal came after six minutes after Sinclair Armstrong saw his shot saved by Sligo keeper Kayle Watjzczuk but Conan Noonan came in from the left and made no mistake to put the Hoops ahead.

Seven minutes later Armstrong had the easy task of penetrating the Sligo defence and calmly slotting home to double the lead.

The extremely industrious Kyle O’Connor in midfield for the Hoops carried the ball into the box from the end line to deliver into a crowded area, Noonan met it but it was blocked and again Noonan had a second go, this time driving low into the net.

The score stood at 3-0 going in at half time and the Hoops made two changes before the restart.

The changes didn’t effect their game and nine minutes into the half they increased their lead further when Sami Clarke finished off an attack to make it 4-0.

Three minutes later Noonan was taken down in the box and Clarke calmly slotted the ball home from the spot.

A further five minutes on and Roland Banya unleashed a 30-yard shot that no keeper would have stopped. They now led 6-0 and were not finished.

With four minutes remaining Noonan came in from the right and sent the ball into the box where a number of players were grouped together but it was substitute Charlie Gallagher who made contact and drove it home to complete the scoring at 7-0.

To be fair to Sligo, they never let their heads go down and continued to play constructive football. Their best chance came in the 62nd minute when Jack McGovern looked to have beaten Killian Cahill at close range but the Hoops’ keeper produced a top drawer save to push the ball over the bar at the expense of a corner.
