Shamrock Rovers 1-1 St. Kevin’s Boys.
This game kept the very large crowd present on their toes right up to the five minutes added on at the end. The second half had plenty of talking points. Was it a penalty? It wasn’t awarded anyway! Why was a perfectly good goal by the Hoops disallowed? What was the drama on the far touchline at the dug-outs after Rovers scored a second?
The Hoops went ahead in the first half through Dean McMenemy with Paddy Moore equalising for the Saints in the 69th minute. Roland Banya went down in the box in the 71st minute after contact from a Saints defender but the referee and his assistant on that side of the pitch didn’t react.
Rovers appeared to have taken the lead again in the final minute of normal time and although the referee allowed the goal he was then called to the line by his assistant. After a brief period of consultation the free kick from Sami Clarke that was finished to the net by Luke Turner was ordered to be retaken. Apparently St. Kevin’s were making a substitution at the time the referee restarted play for the initial free kick and it had to be taken again. The Hoops potentially suffered from what was clearly a break down in communications between the match officials.
