It was a goal fest last week in our 3-3 draw away to Athlone. Not a bad result to take home, but what are your thoughts on the game and our performance?
“I’d say for the neutral it was a fantastic game to watch. Two teams going fully at it but I think the most pleasing thing was that even though it was a high tempo and a high quality game, we were still able to show good bits of quality from ourselves. Disappointed to not get more than just a point out of it but Athlone are a quality side, they are the champions elect and overall I think it was a good day’s work from the team.”
It was just the one goal for us in the first half but then they were flying in for both sides in the second. What changed to allow all of those chances, goals and attacking football?
“Well I think from our perspective the disappointing thing was that we only had the one goal in the first half. We would have liked to have had a second or a third one in it. I think in the second half Athlone just came out and just went completely at it, they had nothing to lose. They needed to get something out of the game and went fully at it, and with the attacking quality that they have they’re a very hard side to try and keep a clean sheet against. Some of the quality of their goals were outstanding, as you obviously saw from Maddie Gibson but also the cross from Jesi Rossman for Brenda’s (Tabe) goal. It was a high-end quality game and they have high-end quality players. Overall, could have got more but still happy to get something out of it.”
This week sees us face Wexford in the penultimate game of the season. We overcame them dramatically in the FAI Cup in a penalty shootout back in August. Can we expect a tight game similar to that one or are you confident we can wrap the game up a lot earlier than last time?
“No, I’m expecting a really, really tough battle. Even talking to Ciaran Kilduff before our game the other night, they (Athlone) had only played them during the week and he was talking about how difficult their game was against Wexford. That they were a very strong, physical side, made it very difficult for them and we expect something similar again this weekend.”
In terms of threats, did that cup tie show us what we need to be aware of about Wexford this time?
“It does, when you play against a team a couple of times you’re fully aware of what their strengths and weaknesses are. It’s one of those that this week I don’t have to do too much of a prep or analysis on them, the team already knows what they’re going to be facing this weekend so it does help in the preparation part.”
Coming to the end of the season everyone is bound to be a bit tired, but did everyone make it through last week injury free?
“Yes everyone made it through, injury free. Good atmosphere in the camp and everybody’s looking forward to this weekend. We have two games left to go and we have that freedom to play with a free spirit so all looking forward to the game.”
