Collie, we’re here in Tallaght Stadium before Saturday’s game. What will preparations look like for the group in the run up to the game?
I suppose it’s one of those things that we’ve said since the start of the year, that you don’t prepare for finals in the week leading up to it, you prepare in the weeks and months leading up to it. We’ve worked extremely hard over the last couple of months. I think preparation has been good so it’s only a matter of fine-tuning this week.
Galway have won both league games against us by small margins, by 1 goal this year. You’ll be familiar with their threats but also where we can get at them.
Yeah, both games have been fine margins. We’ve had chances, we’ve missed them, they’ve had other little chances and missed them but it seems to be their set plays and second phase off set plays are going to be vital. There’s going to be loads of little individual battles around the pitch but I think it’s going to be the team that has that extra little bit of mental strength, little bit of composure and little extra bit of calmness that will probably be the one that will see it through in the end.
We advanced through to the quarter finals of the FAI Cup. These are the sort of games we want to be involved in- Cup finals, the team competing at the business end of things.
Absolutely, that’s why you do all of your work, that’s why we all play football. We want to be part of these occasions, we want to be part of cup finals, we want to be trying to win things and there’s no better club to be doing it at and there’s no better stadium to be trying to do it at.
Given the close nature of the games between the two sides, there’s every possibility it could go to penalties and given our recent shootout success, you’ll be backing both the players and Amanda to come up top there.
Yeah, absolutely. We’ll do our homework, we always do and that’s not just for cup games, we do our homework in relation to the penalties for every league game so our goalkeepers are well prepared and the players have been getting some extra practice in for penalties during the week, but hopefully it doesn’t come to that, hopefully we can get the work done in normal time.
You’ve a fine mix of youth and experience within the squad. How important is it to have that blend?
It’s fantastic to have that blend. The young kids that are coming through, the likes of Ella Kelly who’s still only 15 years of age, they have a great future ahead of them and there’s no better players than the likes of Áine (O’Gorman), Steph (Zambra), Shauna Fox, Jess Hennessy as the experienced players passing on their knowledge, so it just means that they become better players quicker. It’s great to have that extra little energy of the youth and the experience of the old, it’s a great mixture to have.
The game is live on television. What is your message for Hoops fans coming up to the game again to get out in numbers to support the team?
I think Galway will be bringing huge numbers here. This is our home patch, this is where we should be looking forward to playing our football. I think it’s vitally important that we try and get some fans out here to give that extra little bit of encouragement, that extra little push just to get us over that line.
As far as team news goes, is Jaime back in contention at all, has Summer recovered from her thumb injury and is Scarlett back in?
They are two to be assessed this week. Scarlett should be back in for training this week but with Summer and Jaime we’ll just see how this week goes.
