A 4-0 win over rivals Bohemians on Saturday sent everyone home happy. How did you think the team played?
“Not particularly great, to be honest. I don’t think the scoreline actually reflected how the game went and it was very flattering on us. I thought we were good for the majority of the first half but we didn’t really play at all in the second half.”
And the league record attendance of 1,111 was that fantastic to see?
“It was fantastic to see and you could feel the buzz and the energy from it. It went a long way towards the quick start that we had, and even at the end of the game there were so many kids there. There was a fantastic energy in the place and the players do feed off it.”
Áine O’Gorman is our top scorer now after a brace, she keeps popping up with goals and Jaime Thompson’s dead ball deliveries lead to a couple of others, one from Jess Gargan, so we’re getting goals from all over the pitch?
“We are and I think that’s the way it’s going to be for the rest of the season. I don’t think we’ll have an out-and-out goalscorer; we have a goal threat from all over the pitch. So from any of our set pieces, it can be Shauna, Jess Hennessy or Jess Gargan, as we have great aerial attributes there. But also from open play, we have Alannah and Áine who make those runs and also Abbie and Jaime. So there’s a bundle of players there I expect to be scoring as the season goes on.”
Abbie Larkin won the Player of the match award. It was her great cross for the fourth goal after she had put her name on the scoresheet for the first time this season with a cool finish. Was she delighted to finally get off the mark?
“Yes, I think all the players were delighted for her as well. Everybody knows how hard she works so it was great to see her getting back to what her very best is. The most important thing was to see her playing with a smile on her face. We want our players to enjoy their football and I reckon she really enjoyed Saturday evening.”
Another senior debut, this time for Aoibhe Fleming, was that also a nice moment on the day?
“It was and it’ll always be a theme for the year that we’ll try and bed in as many young players as we can. It’s obviously not just about this year, it’s about trying to build for the future too. The more experience we can get into the youth players the better it’s going to be for the club as the years go by.”
Peamount United have consistently been title challengers the last few seasons and what do you make of them so far this year as they sit at the top of the table?
“They’ve been excellent. We did our video analysis last night and looking at their performances over the last couple of weeks, they’re the side I’ve been most impressed with. They’ve been well organised, hungry and aggressive in their press and also they have good quality players that can hurt you if you do anything wrong. So it’s going to be a really tough one for us on Saturday.”
Which players, in particular, should we watch out for?
“All of them, but Karen Duggan is probably the one that makes them tick from midfield and I think the one that will really stand out is Jess Fitzgerald, who is only 16 years of age in the middle of the park. She’s a fantastic talent, and you have Tara O’Hanlon who even at left-back would be one of their main attacking threats. Then they have experienced players like Becky Watkins and Erin McLaughlin. So they have a bundle of areas, just like us, where they can get goals from.”
Rovers have drawn the last two games on the road which were decent results but will this team always look to build on our impressive Tallaght displays and go all out to win away from home, even against a dangerous team like Peamount?
“Yes and that’s going to be the theme for the year. There’s no game that we’re going to go into and say ‘I hope we get a draw’ or ‘we’ll just sit tight today’. No, I think every single one of our games, our purpose is to try and win the game and that’s exactly what we’ll be doing on Saturday.”
Any new injuries to report?
“No it’s a clean bill of health, just the same two of Maria Reynolds and Stephanie Zambra but we’re hoping to have Stephanie back training in the next week or two.”
