Shamrock Rovers announce new full time contract for ex Under 19 defender Sean Callan.
Speaking with www.shamrockrovers.ie Sean said:
“It’s been great at Rovers. I joined at Under 16s level so it’s my fourth year here at the club. I’ve really enjoyed it and I’m delighted to sign my first professional contract.
2018 was a great season for the Under 19s. At the start of the year our goal was to top our group and reach the league final. That’s what we did but obviously we didn’t win it.
On a personal level, I thought I had a good season and I was happy with it. I captained the lads towards the end of the season. Harry Cornally was captain for the year but I stepped up and took the role when he was injured.
I’ve played at full back a few times when needed but I’m most comfortable at centre-half. I didn’t score last year at all and I was disappointed with that so I was really happy to score five goals this year. It’s good to have as a centre-half.
Now it’s just about working hard and seeing if I can get into the first team. The goal is to be in that starting XI for the start of the season, and if not, work hard and push whoever is ahead of me and keep improving at the same time.
Aaron Bolger and Brandon Kavanagh have done very well. You see that the gaffer gives the lads chances and if you take them it can go very well for you. I’m really excited for next year. It’s going to be my first chance at senior football so I just can’t wait to get started.”
Head Coach, Stephen Bradley said:
“I’m delighted to get Sean on his first contract. He has a lot of potential and hopefully he can fulfil that with us, having him in full time and getting him working with the group.
Sean’s been doing well for the last couple of years and he’s one that we’ve liked and had him around the first team, training on quite a few occasions.
I believe that he’s matured a lot, in the last year especially and he’s become a better player. He can play centre, left or right back. He has really good attributes in either position and he’s very dangerous from set pieces.”
