The death occurred this afternoon in Dublin of our former player Jimmy ‘Maxie’ McCann.
‘Maxie’ joined the Hoops in 1953/54 as an outside left having been brought to the club from Clontarf FC by the then chairman Joe Cunningham.
He scored a hattrick on his debut against Waterford and played a huge part in the winning of the league title that same season.
As part of the famous ‘Coad’s Colts’ he enjoyed success after success and had the distinction of being the first player to score for a League of Ireland club in European competition. That achievement came in the second leg of the Preliminary Round against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The Hoops lost that game 3-2.
We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to ‘Maxie’s’ family upon their sad loss. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later time.
