Shamrock Rovers have great pleasure in announcing the return to the fold of former player Ronan Finn. The Dubliner was more recently a key influential player at Dundalk having joined the border club in 2015. Previously Finn had spent three full seasons with the Hoops. He was a league winner with the club in his first season in 2011 and was a pivotal figure in the team that created history in the League by qualifying for the group stages of the Europa League that same season.
Finn is still a relatively young player. He is making a return to Shamrock Rovers on the eve of his 29th birthday. He began his career in the League of Ireland in 2005 in the colours of UCD but it was at Sporting Fingal that he came into his own as a much-sought after midfielder. The collapse of the Dublin franchise club was to benefit Shamrock Rovers with then manager Michael O’Neill wasting no time in getting Finn onto the books of the Tallaght club. The attack-minded midfielder settled in straight away and swiftly became a major player on the side that not only qualified for the Europa League but also retained the Premier Division title.
During his time at Dundalk Finn continued to turn heads with his performances. Despite his side losing out to Cork City in the 2016 FAI Cup final, Finn’s influence on the pitch throughout the game earned him the Man of the Match award.
It is that influence, the creativity he provides in the middle of the park for others as well as himself to thrive on, that has made him arguably the best in his class in the League at present.
During his previous spell with the Hoops, from 2011 to 2014, Ronan Finn made a total of 173 competitive appearances in which he found the net 33 times. From Beaumont on the north side of Dublin, Finn has come a long way since he made his home debut for UCD back in 2005 against Shamrock Rovers. He proved to be an instant hit with the Hoops’ fans when he joined in 2011. His popularity earned him the club Player of the Year in 2012 and he is sure to be equally as popular upon his return to the Hoops.
Ronan Finn has a vast pool of experience behind him in the League of Ireland. He will captain the Hoops for what is building up to be an exciting 2017 season at the club as Head Coach Stephen Bradley continues to strengthen his squad.
Speaking today Rovers’ Head Coach Stephen Bradley said that:
“Ronan is a top player, one of the best in the league so we’re absolutely delighted he’s signed for us. He’s been one of the best in the league the last decade and I think we have him at the perfect age. He’s matured a lot so it’s perfect for us.”
“We’ve a strong midfield now and I won’t make any apologies for that, that’s really where games are won and lost for me. No matter how many we play, whether it’s 2/3/4 midfielders we have a lot of experience. The younger players will learn from that and they’ll be delighted.
The younger players in our team will benefit from seeing how Ronan conducts himself on and off the pitch. We have 10 players aged under 19 who can only gain from the experience that Ronan will bring to the side.
We’ve a lot of strong characters inside the dressing room and Ronan is also a strong character. The players that we have managed to retain are leaders and the new signings can also be leaders in the team.
We have to build a team around Ronan, he’s one of the best in the league. He wants to play for us for the right reasons, not for the money that’s been quoted. He wants to play for us because he’s a top player. We have a wage structure here and we’re still within the budget.
He’s an exciting player and I can’t wait to have him playing for us.”
